The Catacombs of Marcellinus and Peter are ancient catacombs situated on the 3rd mile of the ancient Via Labicana, today Via Casilina in Rome, Italy, near the church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro ad Duas Lauros. Their name refers to the Christian martyrs Marcellinus and Peter who, according to tradition, were buried here, near the body of St. Tiburtius. In 2006, over a thousand skeletons were discovered in these catacombs; the skeletons were stacked one on top of each other and still bore the togas they were buried with.〔Nicola Frances Denzey, ''The Bone Gatherers: The Lost Worlds of Early Christian Women'' (Beacon Press, 2007), 30.〕 The Catacombs opened on the 13th April 2014. The Catacomnbs are open only on Saturdays and on Sundays for individual visitors〔 More info at "http://www.santimarcellinoepietro.it/catacombe/english/information-reservationi/" 〕 File:Wilpert 060.jpg|The catacombs File:Christ-Orpheus from Rome catacombe.jpg|Christ as Orpheus in mural painting.
